Good Music

Music was created by God. It is a wonderful thing. God even likes to sing.

Zepeniah 3:17 The LORD thy God in the midst of thee is mighty; he will save, he will rejoice over thee with joy; he will rest in his love, he will joy over thee with singing. (A side note: The phrase "joy over thee" would be better interpreted from the Hebrew as "dance".)
Music is a whole language in it's self. It is very powerful. You can say so much more, and go so much deeper with a good song than with just words. It draws us to God. And draws those together who are singing praises to God. Praising God lifts us right out of discouragement, and puts us into the joy of Jesus.

Ephesians 5:19 Speaking to yourselves in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing and making melody in your heart to the Lord;

Colossians 3:16 Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly in all wisdom; teaching and admonishing one another in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing with grace in your hearts to the Lord.

Good music is great, but even the best songs get old after a while, that's all right. God want's us to sing a new one. Don't just sing the same songs that you have been singing for ever. Make a NEW song to the Lord.

Psalms 33:3 Sing unto him a new song; play skillfully with a loud noise.

Psalms 98:1 O sing unto the LORD a new song; for he hath done marvellous things: his right hand, and his holy arm, hath gotten him the victory.

My favorite scripture on music is:

1Chronicles 25:1 Moreover David and the captains of the host separated to the service of the sons of Asaph, and of Heman, and of Jeduthun, who should prophesy with harps, with psalteries, and with cymbals: and the number of the workmen according to their service was:

It shows that you can prophesy with musical instruments. With the variation of pitch, rhythm, and volume you can tell the truths of God. Everyone knows you can prophesy with words, but that is not what this is talking about, these men were prophesying with harps. Music is a language made up of the variation of pitches, rhythms, and volumes.

Do you know what an instrument is? It is a tool. Like a physician's instruments, they are his tools. And it's the same way with musical instruments; they are tools too. But, do you know what they are used for? Praising God! So when you hear an instrument, remember it is just a tool used to praise God. Like when you see a physician working with his instruments, you don't focus in his instruments, you focus on the work they are doing.

A few more great verses on music and instruments:

1Chronicles 13:8 And David and all Israel played before God with all their might, and with singing, and with harps, and with psalteries, and with timbrels, and with cymbals, and with trumpets.

1Chronicles 25:3b who prophesied with a harp, to give thanks and to praise the LORD.

Psalms 49:4 I will incline mine ear to a parable: I will open my dark saying upon the harp.

My guitar is my harp, it's just wired a little different. I also play trumpet for the Lord.

Some technical notes:
You can change rhythm and volume on all the instruments used to prophesy in 1Chronicles 25:1. But on the cymbal you cannot really change pitch, it is mostly a rhythm instrument. This shows that you do not necessarily have to have all 3 components in order to prophesy.
